The Assessor's Office prepares the
annual grand list of taxable and non-taxable property and
assesses and values real estate, business, personal property and
motor vehicles.

The primary responsibilities of the Tax Assessor are:

Locating and identifying all taxable property in Seymour
-
Making an inventory of the quantity, quality, and
important characteristics of all taxable property
-
Estimating the value of each taxable property
-
Determining the extent of taxability of each property
-
Calculating the assessed value of each property
-
Preparing and certifying the assessment roll of Seymour
-
Notifying owners of the assessed value of their properties
-
Defending value estimated and valuation methods during
appeals by taxpayers
The Assessor's office is also responsible for the
administration of property exemption programs and payment in
lieu of taxes programs. These programs include:

veteran's programs
-
elderly tax relief (homeowners and renters)
-
farm, forest and open space
-
blind and disabled taxpayers
-
manufacturing and zone exemptions
-
private college and hospital exemptions
-
state-owned property reimbursement programs
This office also maintains land maps, property description
cards and property ownership lists.
