The Building Department is responsible for enforcing the Connecticut State Building Code (CSBC). There are no local building codes specific to Seymour. The State Building Code is updated every 3-5 years to remain current as the methods and materials used in construction evolve. We enforce these codes by performing a code compliance plan review prior to issuing a permit for a proposed project. Once the permit has been issued, we perform multiple inspections over the course of construction to verify compliance. The intent of the CSBC is to “establish minimum requirements to safeguard the public safety, health and general welfare.” There are several different classifications of licensing for building inspectors, all of which are mandated by the Connecticut General Statutes to maintain continuing education credits to inform us of any and all code changes. We work alongside the Zoning, Inland Wetlands as well as Planning & Zoning. While each department oversees certain aspects of development throughout Seymour, we as a team strive to provide guidance and technical support to residents, developers and business owners.
