Join Peter and Barbara Rzasa for a fascinating look at “19th Century Charcoal Pits, Colliers, and Woodcutters in Seymour, CT.” Ever notice those big 40-foot circles while hiking in the woods? They’re the remains of old charcoal pits where colliers once stacked and burned logs to make the charcoal that powered the Naugatuck Valley’s booming iron, steel, and brass industries back in the 1800s. More than 17 of these sites have already been found in Seymour! This talk will bring the past to life—discover who built the pits, how the charcoal was used, and learn tips on spotting these hidden pieces of history on your own walks in the forest. Doors open at 12:00 pm presentation starts at 2:00
