Middle School Camp Director

General Statement of Duties

The Middle School Camp Director is responsible for supervising middle school–aged campers during daily programming and off-site field trips. This position provides leadership and guidance to counselors, ensures participant safety and well-being, and supports a positive, inclusive camp environment.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Supervise campers during daily activities and all scheduled off-site field trips, ensuring proper attendance and supervision until all participants are picked up.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and general welfare of campers by enforcing program rules and following established safety and emergency procedures.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for camper or counselor concerns; address issues promptly and escalate significant matters to the Parks & Recreation Manager as appropriate.
  • Complete accident and incident reports in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment by building positive relationships with campers and staff.
  • Act as a positive role model and support campers’ social-emotional development, encouraging teamwork, independence, and respectful behavior.
  • Handle minor camper disputes by facilitating respectful communication and reinforcing appropriate behavior expectations.
  • Assist with daily program operations, including planning schedules, tracking attendance, and managing supplies
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with camp leadership, staff, and parents regarding camper experiences, behavior, and incidents.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with children in a camp, recreation, or school setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, supervision, and guidance to counselors and program participants.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn and enforce, safety regulations, behavior management techniques, and emergency procedures.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, flexibility, and sound judgment.
  • Interest in youth development and the ability to serve as a positive role model for middle school–aged children.

Supervision Received

Reports directly to the Parks & Recreation Manager and works under the general direction of the Director of Community Services.

Salary

$20.00–$24.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.

Work Schedule

Approximately 18 hours per week. Typical schedule is Tuesday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; hours may vary based on field trips or rain dates, which may be scheduled on Mondays or Fridays.
